Wood Fireplaces

If you are in the market to consider putting a wood burning fireplace in your home and you know nothing about them, here are some suggestions and tips that you can start out with. Many people actually find that they prefer a wood burning fireplace

as opposed to any other heat source for their house, but the two can be combined also. However, along with owning a wood burning fireplaces comes the added responsibility of keeping up the fireplace, cleaning it, and doing all of the chores associated with it.

One of the first things that one needs to do when keeping up a fireplace is figure out how much firewood that they'll need for the fireplace. If one uses the fireplace mostly in the winter to stay warm, how much wood will you need for the winter? Usually that question varies from person to person if he or she has an alternate heating source also. For example, if you use a wood burning fireplace to stay warm for some of the time but also use an electric heat source for your home, that will alter the amount of wood that you'll need.

Another item of consideration is the type of wood burning fireplace that you will get. There are several different types of wood burning forms of fireplaces available. A few examples of them are a stone and brick fireplace, which is the traditional form. Many prefer the stone and brick just because it is the most popular. However, one can also purchase a metal box fireplace, where the fire is contained in a metal box. There are even pellet stoves that can be used. Pellet stoves almost look like a large kettle or pot, and it is used by putting in relatively small pellets that are actually formed out of a wood source. There are many choices to decide from when thinking about the type of wood burning fireplace.

How you will get the wood and how you will store it is another issue that needs to be thought about. In colonial times, families would go out in their backyards and woods to chop down trees and tree stumps to obtain their firewood. They would have to do all of that manually and they would have to gather firewood weeks ahead to prepare for the winter time. But now, many shopping stores offer the convenience of purchasing firewood directly from them. The storage of the firewood, however, is still something that needs to be thought about. A good idea is to have a large storage bin sitting right by the fireplace or even directly outside the house so that it's easily accessible.

How do you clean the wood burning fireplace and what's the purpose of a fire poker? Well, the two are actually unrelated, but both essentially deal with the wood fireplace. The fire poker is something that you use in order to keep the fire roaring. Usually you can obtain a fire poker in the form of a long stick or tool, with at least the end being made of iron. Turning the wood and logs when the fire dulls down to a low flame will turn up the heat and the fire in general. On the subject of cleaning the fireplace, there are many ways in which one can clean their fireplace. The most important aspect of cleaning your wood fireplace, however, is to get rid of the all the creosote (soot) that builds up in the chimney flue.

Now you are probably ready to take care of a fireplace and use it for your enjoyment. Just be sure to know what you are doing before you actually embark on your journey in buying a home with a fireplace or having one installed in your home. Being prepared before you get one will have you ready for any situation. Taking care of your fireplace is the one thing that you must know how to do!
