and regular wood burning fireplace that one may not even know where to begin when thinking about remodeling their house specifically for a fireplace. Fortunately there are some questions that you can start out with to figure out if you really do want a gas fireplace put in, or if you want one at all.
Question Number 1: If installing a gas fireplace, what type of vent will you need?
Since gas fireplaces do not use standard electricity to power themselves, they use gas just like any normal gas water heater in your home. Because of this, there are basically two types of vents for gas fireplaces. One type of vent is where it suctions in air through a small opening outside of the house. Usually this can happen through a small vent, pipe, or some other tool that companies use to filter in air. Another way is that the gas fireplace uses the air that's already inside the house. The latter choice is going to be the least expensive when thinking about installing a gas fireplace, but is also the most dangerous. If the gas fireplace uses the air inside the home, there is a possibility that it will cause a problem for those other electric sources that you might have running. For example, a fan that is on top of a stove or nearby the fireplace might interfere with the ability of the gas fireplace to vent itself.
Question Number 2: What is the big deal about using gas to heat the fireplace, and is it better?
The first issue with this question comes into play when considering the cost. A person can easily remodel his or her house to make it so that he can have a standard wood burning fireplace with a chimney to vent it. Wood, in that case, is preferable. Using a gas fireplace is more expensive than wood because not only would you possibly have to remodel your house anyway to fit the gas fireplace in the specific part of your home, but you would be paying the natural gas company that supplies your gas to the fireplace. In this regard, wood fireplaces are least expensive.
Question Number 3: How big and beautiful can a gas fireplace be?
This is a loaded question, and the simple answer to it is this: it can be as big and as beautiful as you want it to be. Most companies that sell gas fireplaces usually make various sizes to fit everyone’s needs and wants. If you want a large fireplace then you would be able to have one. On the other hand, if you need a small one, there are small fireplaces also. And the gas fireplace can be as beautiful and as ornate as you want them to be also. You can buy plenty of accessories, like mantels, glass doors and other accessories to add to the beautiful rendition of your fireplace. Usually you will have more options with a gas fireplace than a regular one when it comes to decorations.
Those are the top three questions that you should start out with before thinking about actually installing a gas fireplace in your home. Even though installing a gas fireplace is tempting to do and would like great in your house, there are some pros and cons to consider before making that large purchase. All in all, gas fireplaces come with a lot of options, but you must weigh those options before going on. |
